Little ray of Sunshine

How to find the perfect yellow?

There is something truly magical about yellow. To me, it is nature’s own version of sunshine bottled up and brought indoors.

Yellow colours in my garden.

In my own home, I lean into this warmth in my dining area. It’s a space that doesn’t get much natural light, so I use yellow to act as a surrogate sun, warming the room and making every meal feel like a cheerful, golden gathering.

But I know yellow can feel intimidating—if you pick the wrong shade, it can quickly go from "cheerful retreat" to "overwhelming chaos." As a designer who loves natural materials and grounded, earthy spaces, I’m here to show you how to embrace this joyful colour the right way.

The Designer’s Secret: It’s All in the Undertones

The secret to loving yellow is understanding its personality. Yellow is never just yellow; it’s a spectrum of light and energy.

For a soft, organic feel look for ochre, mustard, or butter-yellows with earthy, brown undertones. These harmonise beautifully with natural wood, linen, and stone.

Think about what you want to achieve in the space and always consider what you already have (materials, furnitures, objects) when you are choosing a colour for your walls.

For a crisp, modern vibe lean toward lemony, brighter yellows with a touch of green. These are fantastic for rooms that need a serious injection of wake-up energy.

Avoid overly neon or high-gloss synthetic yellows. They often clash with the organic textures we love, like raw wood or wool.

What to Watch Out For (The "Yellow Traps")

Even the most beautiful shade of yellow can become tricky if not handled with care. Yellow is a powerful reflector.

If you paint a whole room a strong yellow, that colour will bounce off the walls and cast a yellow glow onto everything else—including your skin tone! Keep your stronger yellows to accessories, art, or a single feature wall if you’re worried about the room feeling overwhelming.

In a room already flooded with bright, harsh sunlight, a vibrant yellow can feel relentless. Save the boldest, brightest yellows for rooms like my dining area—places that are naturally darker and craving that warm, sunny "boost."

How to Embrace It (Without the Fear)

You don’t have to paint your entire living room yellow to feel the benefits. Here is how I suggest incorporating it naturally:

1. Start with Textiles: A mustard linen throw on a sofa or a set of soft yellow cushions can bring that "sunshine" feeling into a room without being permanent.

2. Bring in Nature’s Yellow: Sometimes, the best way to use yellow is through botanical elements. A vase of dried wheat, golden-hued flowers, or even a piece of honey-toned driftwood can add that perfect touch of warmth.

3. The "Pop" in Details: Use yellow in small, intentional doses—perhaps the interior of a bookshelf, a patterned rug, or a piece of ceramic art. It creates a "treasure hunt" effect, where the eye is drawn to these happy spots throughout the space.

Yellow is a colour that celebrates life. When you choose a shade that feels natural and layer it thoughtfully with the materials you love, you aren’t just decorating—you’re creating a home that feels like a permanent, sunny afternoon.

Are you brave enough to add a splash of sunshine to your home this year? Which room are you thinking of brightening up first?
